Best of the Blog 2012: Digital Ministry, Pastoral Transition, and Church Leadership

20122012 was the most challenging and gratifying in my professional career. I published my first book, left one call and accepted another, and relocated our family of six from Boston to Philadelphia. It was a great year to be blogging to document it all.

What I've learned about blogging is that one does not only write a blog to process the present moment, but also to observe how one's own perspective, style, and interests evolve over time.

I blog, in part, to discover what I'm interested in, what seems worth writing about, and to chip away at larger ideas and challenges in 1000 words or less. In short, in blogging, like all writing, I suppose, the thing you learn the most about is yourself.

So, in a new a new tradition (drum roll) here's the best of my blog, 2102 edition:

Social Media Bishop: A Conversation With Bishop Jim Hazelwood

Bishop Jim Hazelwood of the New England Synod of the ELCA is using social media to help make his synod more relational and his office as bishop more accessible.

In this video conversation we talk about the ways he is using blogging, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and texting to connect and tell the story of his synod - and to remind us that "we are the synod."

Bishop Hazelwood makes extensive use of video to document his travels, bring greetings when he cannot be somewhere in person, and share what's on his mind and heart. He also relates the story of doing a "Talk and Text" gathering with synod youth, recieving 369 text messages in an hour. His blog, Bishop on a Bike, serves as the hub of his digital ministry and provides a personal, less institutional, way to connect with the bishop.

Bishop Hazelwood is doing great stuff and his practice of digital ministry has great application to people in all ministry settings. The video starts after the jump. Enjoy!

Three Questions on Religion and Media for Professor Mark Vitalis Hoffman

What are the core compentencies of digital ministry? What role do apps play in the life of faith? What are the benefits of blogging?

Professor Mark Vitalis Hoffman (website, blog), Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, takes up these questions as part of the LTSG spring blog tour. (More information and a listing of all the tour stops here.) In August, LTSG, in partnership with Luther Seminary, will launch of a new religion and media concentration in its MAR program. It's exciting to see our Lutheran seminaries providing formal training in this area - and that's where my questions begin:

1. As you've developed the MAR media concentration, what have you identified as the core competences that ministry leaders should have in digital social media?

“Religion and Media” is not only a very broad category, but it is also a constantly changing one. I can point to the outcomes we have defined:

  • Demonstrate literacy in a variety of media, including:
    • an awareness of the range and rapidly changing landscape of global media
    • the capacity to discern differing levels of authority
    • the ability to assess varying forms of authenticity
    • and the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of media;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how social practices of story-telling, meaning-making, and the formation of identity and community are shaped by media;
  • Be able to promote matters of faith in public life through media and provide leadership for doing so in their congregation or agency;
  • Be able to support constructive discernment and spiritual formation in the midst of social media; and
  • Reflect theologically on how media shapes the practices of their own theological tradition.

Bring More People to Your Church Website or Blog In Five Easy Steps Using Google Search

googlesearchBack in the day, people used the Yellow Pages to find churches and local businesses.

Since all the Yellow Pages listings were done alphabetically, people would purposely name their companies with something that started with an "A" like "American" or "AAA", so they'd appear first and get found faster. Easy.

Now, of course, people don't flip through the Yellow Pages. They Google it. And getting found on Google - and its super secret search algorithm - takes more than just your "A" name. It requires your "A" game.
